Q: What is the Safe Routes to School Program and the Vision Zero Initiave?

A: Safe Routes to School is a national movement to make it easier and safer for students to walk and bike to school. Please visit the Safe Routes to School web page for more information. Vision Zero is Seattle's plan to end traffic deaths and serious injuries on city streets by 2030. Please visit the Vision Zero web page for more information. 

Q: What are you going to do with my artwork/video?

A: The winning video will be added to SDOT's Youtube page. All materials received will become property of the City of Seattle. They may be used in educational/information resources to promote Vision Zero and other City of Seattle safety efforts. Whenever possible, the City will give credit to the artists. Winners will be announced by email.

Q: How can I participate if my school was not selected?

A: Students in the City of Seattle are still able to participate in the program through the 48-Hour Film Challenge.

Q: What is the 48-Hour Film Challenge?

A: The 48-Hour Film Challenge is a subset program in which students in the City of Seattle can participate in the Safe Routes to School Video Challenge. It is an intense two days of going through facilitated workshops where students learn to develop a pitch of their idea from learning about the Safe Routes to School Program and Vision Zero Initiative adopted by the City. Students of all skills and abilities will learn how to handle video equipment, then go through the video production process from shooting film to editing and final video production. Students are also welcome to return for the Spring Break Camp to further work on their projects before final submissions in April.

Q: What if I do not have a bike and/or helmet?

A: Try to rent a bicycle from a local bike rental shop or use bikeshare. If that is not an option, contact Reel Grrls for additional options.

Q: What prizes can my team win?

A: Please see the PRIZES header below for a list of potential prizes your team is eligible to win!

Q: When can I submit my video project?

A: We are accepting videos until April 30th 12:00 AM midnight (PST).

Q: Can I change my submission after I've submitted?

A: No, you many not make any changes after submitting.

Q: Who is judging my submission?

A: There will a group of individuals reviewing the videos such as the Safe Routes to School Coordinator, the Vision Zero Coordinator, Reel Grrls representative, the SDOT program manager and others.

Q: When will I find out who wins?

A: Sponsors will communicate with Entrants by the e-mail address or phone number provided. If an Entrant cannot be contacted, is ineligible, or fails to claim an award, the award may be forfeited and an alternate Entrant may be selected from remaining valid, eligible entries timely submitted. Winners will be announced May 24-27th.

Q: What criteria are the judges using to evaluate the designs and make their recommendations?

A: 

  • Interpretation and clarity of the theme to the viewer.
  • Creativity and originality of the depicted theme.
  • Incorporating Safe Routes to School and/or Vision Zero information.
  • Inspiration.
