Garfield Superblock Enhancements
Updated: March 11, 2025
What's happening now?
We were excited as construction began for the Garfield Superblock Enhancements Project on March 8!
Work is expected to last about eight weeks, depending on weather conditions.
What are we doing?
We’re making improvements in the area, including:
- Repairing sidewalks
- Rebuilding curbs
- Installing new curb ramps
Where Will This Happen?
We’ll be working in phases:- First, on the west side of 25th Ave, between E Cherry St and E Jefferson St. We’ll repair the sidewalk and rebuild the curbs.
- Next, on the south side of E Cherry St, between 23rd Ave and 25th Ave. We’ll repair the sidewalk, rebuild the curbs and install new curb ramps at the intersection of 24th Ave and E Cherry St.
- Finally, on the east side of 25th Ave, between E Cherry St and E Jefferson St. We’ll repair the sidewalk, rebuild the curbs and install new curb ramps at the intersection of 25th Ave and E Jefferson St.
How Will This Impact You?
- Parking: No parking on the east side of 25th Ave during sidewalk repairs.
- Driveway access: We’re rebuilding all driveway entrances along 25th Ave for a smoother transition to the street. This will temporarily restrict driveway access. We’ll notify you at least 48 hours in advance before work begins.
About the Project
The Garfield Superblock is a two-block area in the Central District that features Garfield High School, a park, and other community spaces. The park, the surrounding sidewalks and curbs are in poor condition, which results in drainage issues.
To address these issues, the community has worked with Seattle Parks and Seattle Public Schools to develop a master plan for the area. They’ve also secured funding to improve the park. Now, as part of the Neighborhood Street Fund program, we’ll improve the sidewalks and curbs.
The photo above shows the sidewalk along 25th Ave near Garfield Superblock before upcoming improvements.
We’ll repair the existing sidewalks and rebuild the curbs along E Cherry St and 25th Ave to address the drainage issues and improve access to the park. Here’s what we’re doing:
- We’re repairing existing sidewalks and curbs on the south side of E Cherry St between 23rd St and 25th Ave, and both sides of 25th Ave between E Cherry St and E Jefferson St.
- We’re also adding new curb ramps at E Cherry St and 24th St and E Jefferson St and 25th Ave.

Project Background
This is one of nine Neighborhood Street Fund projects requested by community and selected by the Levy to Move Seattle Oversight Committee. Neighborhood Street Fund is a city program, running on 3-year cycles, that enables neighbors to propose and help prioritize transportation-related projects that are then built by the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT).
