Paving, sidewalk repair and pedestrian ramps

Updated: January 23, 2026

What's happening now?

We are completing final work associated with the Denny Way AAC project and in the coming weeks we will repair materials that house Seattle City Light wires under Denny Way.

Image is of a map showing the locations of work on Denny Way near 7th and near BorenImage shows the location of the two work zones on Denny Way where we will be working in the coming weeks.

There will be some short-term lane reductions in two locations along Denny Way. The details of the changes to traffic patterns can be found below:

The first area of work is in the westbound lanes on Denny Way between 7th Ave N and Dexter Ave N -the work includes eastbound and westbound lane closures

  • January 27: One westbound lane will be closed between 7th Ave and Dexter Ave from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. We will use the eastbound lanes to keep at least one lane of traffic open in each direction during our work. The contractor will install steel plates in the westbound lane before 3 p.m. and all lanes will be open to traffic by 3pm.
  • January 29 (Night work): One westbound lane will be closed between 7th Ave and Dexter Ave from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. We will use the eastbound lanes to keep at least lane of traffic open in each direction during our work. We will place steel plates over the work area once the work is complete and reopen the road by 5 a.m.
  • February 1: One westbound lane will be closed between 7th Ave and Dexter Ave from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. We will use the eastbound lanes to keep at least one lane of traffic open in each direction during our work. We will place steel plates over the work area once the work is complete and reopen the road before 7 p.m.
  • February 6 to February 9 (Weekend Closure): One westbound lane will be closed between 7th Ave and Dexter Ave from 7 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. We will use the eastbound lanes to keep at least one lane of traffic open in each direction during our work. You can expect one westbound lane to be closed over the entire weekend to allow the concrete to be cured. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday.
  • February 9: One westbound lane closes between 7th Ave and Dexter Ave from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. One westbound lane of traffic will remain open during this work. Both eastbound lanes will remain open.

The second area of work is in the westbound lanes on Denny Way between Boren Ave N and Fairview Ave N: – the work includes westbound and eastbound lane closures

  • February 17: One westbound lane will be closed between Boren Ave N and Fairview Ave N from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. We will use the eastbound lanes to keep at least one lane of traffic open in each direction during our work.
  • February 19 (Night work): One westbound lane will be closed between Boren Ave N and Fairview Ave N from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. We will use the eastbound lanes to keep at least one lane of traffic open in each direction during our work.
  • February 22: One westbound lane will be closed between Boren Ave N and Fairview Ave N from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. We will use the eastbound lanes to keep at least one lane of traffic open in each direction during our work. We will make every effort to reopen all the lanes earlier than 7 p.m. if our work gets completed sooner.
  • February 27 to March 2 (Weekend closure): One westbound lane will be closed between Boren Ave N and Fairview Ave N from 7 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. We will use the eastbound lanes to keep one lane of traffic open in each direction during our work. You can expect one westbound lane to be closed over the entire weekend to allow the concrete to cure. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday.
  • March 2: One westbound lane will close between Boren Ave N and Fairview Ave N from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. One westbound lane of traffic will remain open during this work. Both eastbound lanes will remain open.

Please note that our work is weather dependent and this schedule is subject to change.

Overview

Seattle’s Denny Way connects Capitol Hill and Interstate 5 to South Lake Union, Downtown and Uptown Seattle as a primary arterial in accessing many of the city’s core  neighborhoods to the west, south and north. It is also a major freight route and a part of the City of Seattle’s frequent transit network. We have begun work to pave approximately 12 blocks of Denny Way to restore the pavement condition in this critical piece of Downtown Seattle’s arterial network. Work will also include sidewalk and curb ramp upgrades, additional signage, and bus stop consolidation.

Improvements

The Denny Way Paving Project included:

  • 12 blocks of asphalt paving
  • 21 rebuilt curb ramps and 8 new curb ramps
  • 8 total curb bulbs that shorten crossing distances, including 4 paint-and-post curb bulbs, a plastic curb and post bulb, and 3 concrete curb bulbs
  • 28 "no turn on red" signs
  • 25 painted stop bars at every intersection with a signal
  • Sidewalk improvement
  • Hardened centerlines reinforcing existing turn restrictions
  • Bus stop changes to improve transit travel time and reliability
  • Pour new sidewalks, concrete street sections, and build new pedestrian ramps.

Things you should Know About Construction

You can expect:

  • Noise, dust, smells, and vibrations during the work.
  • Changes to your walking route while we work on sidewalks, with clear signs to guide you.
  • Access to your business will always be maintained. We'll let you know in advance about work and any effects to your business in person. We'll also give you a direct contact for your questions.
  • Street paving happening between 7 PM and 6 AM Monday-Friday, with some daytime and weekend work if needed.
  • Parking and loading areas shifting near work zones, though most work happens at night to limit disruptions.
  • Lane shifts along Denny Way near work areas, with signage to direct traffic.
