We will begin the SW Barton St Layover Repaving project in April 2026. Before then, we will host an in-person information session in February 2026.

  • When: March 2, 2026, 6:30-7:30 PM
  • Where: The meeting will take place on Zoom

If you can't join us in February, don't worry. We will continue sharing updates on this webpage and with emails. Click this link to sign up for the project emails.

What are we doing and why?

SW Barton Street (near the Westwood Village shopping center), is full of large cracks, and the concrete is buckling in several areas. This is happening for a few different reasons. First, the soil underneath the road is settling and causing the concrete above to sink. Second, the weight of the buses has worsened this damage, especially in the bus layover zone where buses park at the end of their routes. Crews add asphalt to the street wherever they can, but these temporary fixes lead to louder, bumpier rides.

With help from King County Metro, we plan to repave this street so that it can handle the weight of all the buses that travel on it. We will replace the soil underneath with lightweight cellular concrete. Then, we will repave the road with concrete designed to handle the weight of so many buses. Taking these measures to repave the road will:

  • Reduce maintenance costs for keeping SW Barton St in good repair
  • Lower maintenance costs for buses
  • Make for smoother driving and less damage to Metro buses and other vehicles

When are we beginning this project?
