Yesler Way and 3rd Ave Sidewalk Repairs

Updated: October 21, 2021

What’s happening now?

After further review from our roadway structures engineers, we learned this sidewalk repair in it's current scope will signicantly exceed the project budget because of the areaway under the sidewalk.

We're working with the project applicant to determine other walking improvements nearby that we can build in 2022 and we're coordinating with the Yesler Crescent project which is also making improvements to the 3rd and Yesler intersection.

Project Overview

The project, located at the southwest corner of the Yesler Way and 3rd Ave S intersection, aimed to repair the sidewalk surface above an areaway.

Elements

  • The concept funded by the Levy Oversight Committee included repairing the sidewalk surface and replacing historic purple glass panels.

Benefits

  • Improve mobility: Repairing the sidewalk surface improves mobility for pedestrians, especially those using wheelchairs and other mobility assistive devices
  • Preserve affordable housing: Fixing the sidewalk should address a drainage problem at an adjacent historic building that serves low-income residents
  • Enhance Pioneer Square's historic character: Several historic purple glass skylights embedded in the sidewalk are in poor condition. Repairing or replacing these will restore the historic appearance of the sidewalk

Schedule

We had hoped to build this in 2021, but beacuse of challenges in the project design, we expect to build nearby sidewalk improvements in 2022.

Project Background

In 2019, the Yesler Way and 3rd Ave Sidewalk Repair Project was one of 15 selected by the Levy to Move Seattle Oversight Committee to be funded through SDOT's Neighborhood Street Fund (NSF) Program. Neighborhood Street Fund is a City program, running on 3-year cycles, that enables neighbors to propose and help prioritize transportation-related projects that are then built by the Seattle Department of Transportation.
