Garfield Superblock Enhancements

What's happening now?
This is one of nine projects requested by community and selected by the Levy to Move Seattle Oversight Committee for the 2022-2024 cycle of the Neighborhood Street Fund. For the 2022-2024 cycle, we made changes to the typical NSF process. Instead of calling for new ideas, we revisited the large pool of unselected 2019 applications for projects located in geographic equity areas. Project design is underway and construction will occur in 2024.
We recently updated the design to include sidewalk and curb repair on the east side of 25th Ave E between E Cherry St and E Jefferson St. We also plan to upgrade all the curb ramps at E Cherry St and 24th Ave to help improve access to Garfield Playfield. We’ll share updates on our webpage and through this email list.
Project Overview
The Garfield Superblock is a two-block area in the Central District comprised of Garfield High School, park space, and other community destinations. The park is in poor condition and the surrounding sidewalks and curb are in disrepair, which results in drainage issues. The community has worked with Seattle Parks and Seattle Public Schools to develop a master plan for the area and secured funding for park improvements. The Neighborhood Street Fund project will build pedestrian improvements around the perimeter of the park to compliment the interior work. The project will repair the existing sidewalk and rebuild the curb along E Cherry St and 25th Ave to address the drainage issues and improve access to the park. The project will include the following improvements:
- Repair existing sidewalk and curb on the south side of E Cherry St between 23rd St and 25th Ave, and both sides of 25th Ave between E Cherry St and E Jefferson St
- New curb ramps at E Cherry St and 24th St and E Jefferson St and 25th Ave

Project Background
This is one of nine Neighborhood Street Fund projects requested by community and selected by the Levy to Move Seattle Oversight Committee. Neighborhood Street Fund is a city program, running on 3-year cycles, that enables neighbors to propose and help prioritize transportation-related projects that are then built by the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT).
