33rd Ave W Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge

What's Happening Now?
We completed 60% design in Fall 2022 and the project has been paused while additional funding is identified to finalize the design and construct the bridge. The new bridge will replace the existing bridge with a new angled alignment that is within the City right-of-way. The updated design includes:
On the south end of the bridge:
- Extending the project all the way to end of the trail (where it connects to 32nd Ave W), at the interface with the neighborhood on the south side, to include paving improvements along the trail.
- Modifying the transition off the bridge at the south end to increase the curve and create a smoother transition onto the trail
Bridge structure:
- The structure type has been updated to be twin steel support beams, which is both more economical and will better match the aesthetic of the area.
- Adding lighting along the bridge.
- Extending the walls and fencing adjacent to the bridge.

What's next?
We completed 60% design in Fall 2022.
This project is only funded up to 60% design through the Levy to Move Seattle. Final design and construction are not currently funded. We'll provide an update when we have further information on next steps.

Project overview
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is evaluating the feasibility and options to rehabilitate or to replace the 33rd Ave W Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge in Magnolia. While still safe to use, the bridge is showing signs of deterioration. This timber bridge connects people walking and biking across an active railroad corridor to Commodore Park and the Ballard Locks area. There are no plans to remove the 33rd Ave W bridge, and the bridge is still safe to use.
Project location
Located in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle, the 33rd Ave W Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge is located near the Salmon Bay waterfront. The bridge is an important part of Seattle's biking and walking network and links Magnolia to Ballard and the Burke-Gilman Trail. The bridge crosses an active railroad corridor, which runs through the city from the Industrial District in the south to Broadview in the northwest.

Funding
The 33rd Ave W Pedestrian Bridge is partially funded by the 9-year Levy to Move Seattle, approved by voters in 2015. Additional funding is being sought to complete final design and construction.
