Longfellow Creek Bridge Replacement

Updated: July 7, 2026

Summer 2026

This project's scope is to replace the old wooden bridge that failed in Fall 2020 with a new steel truss bridge that will last much longer and be easier to maintain. The original bridge was struck by a fallen tree, which caused it to fail structurally and partially fall into the creek.

Seattle Parks and Recreation has successfully obtained the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s HPA over water crossing permits. The bridge is currently under internal design review as well as undergoing the Seattle Department of Construction & Inspections (SDCI) permit approval process.

Due to new design criteria, identifying local vendors who can provide pricing and delivery has delayed the 90% design submission of this project. Our goal is to have a final new design and begin the replacement as soon as SDCI approves this design, which has required additional geotechnical studies and reports. We are targeting to have the bridge in place before the end of 2026. This project will be completed by SPR's in-house staff.

Permitting update
We are currently awaiting engineer design corrections in response to SDCI reviewers’ requirements. Our goal is to have revised plans for submission by early August 2026 for review.

Project Description

This project's scope is to replace the old wooden bridge that failed in Fall 2020, with a new steel truss bridge that will last much longer and be easier to maintain.

This project was initiated in mid-2022 the design for a Corten steel bridge to be placed on original bridge footings and with improved creek water level clearance. The project focuses on improved materials quality to reduce maintenance needs, improve durability while blending into surrounding landscape character.
