Updated: September 11, 2019

What's happening now?

We're approaching final design to build new sidewalks on both sides of 8th Ave S in South Park between S Southern St and S Sullivan St. We expect to build the new sidewalks in 2020.

we are here

Project Overview

We're planning to build new sidewalks on 8th Ave S between S Sullivan St and S Southern St in South Park in 2020. We'll build a new sidewalk on the east side of the street where a temporary in-street walkway was installed in 2016 and we'll replace the existing sidewalk on the west side. The new sidewalk will preserve as many street trees as possible on the east side of the street and will remove the pavement of the existing damaged sidewalk. The sidewalk will meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, making it easier and safer for people of all ages and abilities to walk to destinations like the South Park Community Center, South Park Library, and local businesses.

Background

Over several years the existing sidewalk was harmed because of growing tree roots damaging the pavement. Based on feedback from neighbors, we made efforts to save the trees while preserving parking and maintaining access for people walking. This led to the creation of the existing temporary walkway. We now have funding to construct a permanent sidewalk and plan to construct the sidewalk in the footprint of the existing walkway to preserve as many trees as possible.
