Wedgwood to Roosevelt Neighborhood Greenway

Updated: April 14, 2021

What's Happening Now?

Construction will begin on the final components of the Wedgewood to Roosevelt Neighborhood Greenway project as soon as June 2021.

We will install traffic calming, wayfinding, and pavement markings along the greenway route shown below. The project will include new speed humps with a spit in the center for easier bicycle navigation, located about every 300 feet along the neighborhood streets. To prioritize people walking and biking along the neighborhood greenway we will install stop signs at intersecting neighborhood streets and utilize improved crossings of busy streets. We will install new flashing beacon crossings on 15th Ave NE in coordination with the 15th Ave NE Paving project currently underway.

Speed hump design

This speed hump design is purposely created to allow cyclists to navigate through the speed hump and maintain cyclist momentum. The speed hump will still allow vehicles to pass over and treat speeds as effectively as traditional humps.

What to expect during construction

Typical construction hours are weekdays, 7 AM to 5 PM, with occasional weekend and night work. Other expected construction effects may include:

  • Temporary driveway impacts
  • Noise and vibration
  • Dust and debris
  • Construction staging and parking impacts near the work sites
  • Parking impacts
  • Crosswalk and sidewalk closures, and detours for people walking and biking
  • Roadway closures and detours for vehicle traffic
  • Changes in construction schedule due to unforeseen circumstances (i.e., weather, soil conditions, etc.)

Decorative intersection installation is complete.

We have completed the installation of the decorative intersection at NE 68th St and 21St Ave NE. The new intersection highlights the connection to the park and does not restrict the way people drive on the street.

Project Overview

The Wedgwood to Roosevelt Neighborhood Greenway will provide a safer connection for people walking and biking between the Wedgwood Neighborhood Greenway (39th Ave NE) and the Roosevelt neighborhood. The planned neighborhood greenway connects residents to local schools, parks, and businesses as well as the citywide transportation network. The new neighborhood greenway will connect affordable, active transportation options for people of all ages and abilities.

What's a Neighborhood Greenway?

Neighborhood greenways are safer, calmer residential streets for you, your family, and neighbors. We make people walking and biking the priority.

Neighborhood greenways can include:

  • 20 mph speed limit signs
  • speed humps to calm traffic
  • stop signs for side streets crossing the neighborhood greenway
  • signs and pavement markings to help people find their way
  • easier crossings of busy streets with crosswalks, flashing beacons, or traffic signals

The Wedgwood to Roosevelt neighborhood greenway will enhance safe access for students walking and biking to Roosevelt High School and the Northeast Branch Seattle Public Library. The greenway will connect people between protected bike lanes, an existing neighborhood greenway, and the Burke Gilman Trail.
