Safe Routes to School: 21st Ave

Updated: May 12, 2020

What's happening now?

We're currently finalizing the design of these improvements, and we expect construction to begin as early as summer 2020.

Project Overview

Safe Routes to School is a national movement to make it easier and safer for students to walk and bike to school. We're making several improvements across Seattle to calm traffic, increase visibility, and reduce the crossing distance at intersections.

In 2020, SDOT will be making improvements at the intersections of 21st Ave with E Cherry Street and E Jefferson St, near Garfield High School.

Project elements:

  • Curb bulbs and curb ramp improvements
  • New painted crosswalks on the east and west sides of 21st Ave and E Cherry St intersection
  • In-street pedestrian signage in the crosswalk on the east side of 21st Ave, at the intersection with E Jefferson St
  • Repainted and restriped roadway
  • Bicycle safety improvements
  • Drainage improvements

Construction impacts

  • During construction, you can expect noise, dust, vibration, and large equipment
  • Traffic lanes and sidewalks may be reduced or detoured where necessary
  • Driveways may be temporarily blocked. Businesses and residents will be notified of any driveway closures at least 48 hours in advance
  • A member of our Real Property Team will be contacting you if we need you to sign a Temporary Construction Easement (TCE) to complete work near your property

Schedule

We expect construction to begin as soon as summer 2020.

Funding

This project is funded by the 9-year Levy to Move Seattle, which was approved by voters in 2015, as well as our local Safe Routes to School program
