District 3 - Project Updates

2017 Your Voice, Your Choice: Parks and Street Elected Projects

STREETS | I-5 Offramp onto Olive Way

Crossing Upgrades

Project Description and Goals:
People traveling the I-5 freeway northbound can exit onto E Olive Way. However, due to its design, people exiting the freeway have limited visibility and must slow from a high rate of speed very quickly. These conditions make it challenging for pedestrians who are crossing the off-ramp to access downtown Seattle via Olive Way. Installing crossing beacons to alert people driving of pedestrians enhances safety. New curb ramps to be constructed by others.

Project Solution(s):

Install crossing beacons

Construction anticipated in spring/summer 2023 pending WSDOT coordination.

STREETS | 19th Ave S and E Denny Way

Crossing Upgrades

Project Description and Goals:
Many travelers use E Denny Way as a commuting route into the City and pedestrians have expressed difficultly when crossing Denny at 19th Ave S. The northeast corner of the intersection has a school bus stop for students attending TOPS K-8 school. Installing a marked crosswalk and curb ramps enhances the connection to TOPS K-8 School, safety and accessibility at this intersection.

Project Solution(s):

Install a marked crosswalk on the north side of E Denny Way

Install new curb ramps

Construction was completed in November 2018.

PARKS | Judkins Park and S Dearborn St

Crossing Upgrades

Project Description and Goals:
Judkins Park is poorly connected to the community on its east side at S Dearborn St. The park entrance at this location contains two pathways; one of them is overgrown and disrupted by tree roots, the second isn't accessible for everyone.

Enhancing walkways and adding seating space improves accessibility and connectivity for travelers of all ages and abilities, and better connects Judkins Park to the community.

Project Solution(s):

Restore and enhance the existing walkway to create a gracious park entry

Maintain ADA compliance

Install a park bench at the top of the park to promote its scenic viewpoint

Construction was completed in 2019.

An aerial map depicting the Judkins park playfield and the internal walkways within the park. Newly enhanced walkways and landscape maintenance upgrades to the park, are shown on it's eastern side connecting this entrance to south dearborn street.
