Jefferson Park, the sixth largest park in the city, offers unparalleled views of the Duwamish River, the city and the Olympic Mountains. The Olmsted-inspired path system flanked by trees offers a wonderful respite from city life along with many active opportunities. The covering of the reservoirs and two voter-approved Park levies transformed the park into a great community gathering place for southeast Seattle. It is the home to the Bill Wright Golf Complex at Jefferson Park, the Jefferson Community Center, Jefferson Lawn Bowling, Jefferson Skatepark and Beacon Mountain.
Bill Wright Golf Complex at Jefferson Park
Bill Wright played golf at Franklin High School and Western Washington University and became the first Black competitor to win a US Golf Association championship. He learned the game at Jefferson Park Golf Course on Beacon Hill and made history in 1959 when he won the US Amateur Public Links Championship in Denver. In 2024, Jefferson Park Golf Course was officially renamed in honor of Bill Wright.

Jefferson Park Playfield Synthetic Turf Replacement Project
Fall 2024
The playfield’s synthetic turf was replaced in summer/fall of 2023 and is open for public use. Seattle Parks and Recreation conducted condition assessments on all our synthetic turf fields in 2018, which informed both immediate maintenance needs and the order in which field projects are funded for replacement. This project replaced 153,500 sq ft of aging synthetic turf at Jefferson Playfield. This included the removal of the old ‘worn out’ synthetic turf and addressed structural repairs to curbing, subsurface drainage, and the rubberized running track.
Continued improvements are being planned to make field access more accessible. The implementation of these accessibility improvements is on a separate project timeline from the turf replacement project due to additional permitting requirements. Osborn Consulting is finalizing construction drawings for the addition of two accessible parking stalls and an accessible ramp off 16th Ave S. This work is currently anticipated to be under constructionin early 2025..
Budget
The budget for planning, design, and construction of the synthetic turf replacement and accessibility improvements is $2.8 million. The funding is provided by the REET I Capital Fund.
