Outdoor Pickleball Planning

Updated: June 22, 2023

Summer 2023

In early 2023, Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) selected a consultant team to assist with a detailed analysis and local engagement for dedicated pickleball sites that were identified in the 2021-2022 Outdoor Pickleball Study (view the summary report here).
These are:

  • North: Bitter Lake Reservoir Lid Open Space; Warren G. Magnuson Park
  • South: Genesee Park; Georgetown Playfield; Hiawatha Playfield

The Outdoor Pickleball Study identified many opportunities and challenges to each of the sites.

It is anticipated that a contract will be completed in July 2023. Detailed site analyses will begin in August 2023 along with a public engagement process. Meetings will be scheduled with a stakeholder group consisting of both tennis and pickleball players and public meetings near to the potential sites.

The detailed analyses will include:

  • Identifying participant parking, traffic circulation and access, noise related to pickleball play, site utilities and drainage, etc.
  • Constructability, meaning identifying issues about how sites could be constructed relative to costs.
  • Developing estimated construction costs; and selecting two sites for future development depending upon funding.

Schedule

Work on this project is anticipated to begin in late July or early August with completion by late December 2023 to early January 2024.
