Maple Wood Playfield, Public Restroom and Play Area Renovation Project

This project is in permit review by the Seattle Department of Construction & Inspections (SDCI). The scope was added to address fire damage at the restroom and increased stormwater detention requirements. Maple Wood Playfield and Play Area Renovation has been selected for a number of grants from RCO/NPS and King County totaling $1.31 Million.
This renovation project will implement much-needed facility improvements for the playfield, restroom, basketball court, play area, and accessibility improvements throughout the park. The improvements will include new drainage and irrigation, regrading of the fields, new grass playing surface, new backstops, new dugouts, new bleachers, re-surfacing of the basketball court, new play equipment, and adjustments to the fields to allow for a wider variety of sports to be played. The accessibility improvements will bring the accessible parking space up to current ADA standards and regrading pathways to provide access to the public restroom, and dugouts for both fields. Additional scope has been added to replace the public restroom roof that was damaged by fire.
Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR), Hoshide Wanzer Architects, and PLACE Landscape Architects are finalizing construction drawings. Some updates have been made to the play equipment given community requests for increased nature play. Although there is a couple of month's delay due to the need to acquire a dewatering authorization from King County, we anticipate getting the construction permit in spring 2024 and putting this project out to bid in early summer 2024 with construction to begin in summer/fall 2024.

Budget
The current total approved budget is about $7.055 million. Seattle Parks District Major Maintenance provides $3,785,619 for planning, design and construction of playfield and play area renovations, and $485,000 additional funding recently secured to improve the public restroom/picnic shelter. Additionally, Seattle Parks and Recreation has already secured grant funding, which includes $960,430 Land and Water Conservation Fund and $350,000 Young America's Foundation.

Project Description
This renovation project includes improvements to the athletic playfields, play area, and improves accessible routes of travel to the restroom, field dugouts, play area, and parking lot in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. The project details include new equipment for the play area; new drainage, irrigation, grass playing surface, and backstops for the playfields; ADA access to parking, comfort station, and play area.
During construction, the contractor will need to close the public restroom, playfield and play area. Seattle Parks and Recreation and the contractor hired for the project will work to minimize the impact on the park and neighborhood.
Community Participation
Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) has determined that it does not have a probable significant adverse impact on the environment. An environmental impact statement is not required under RCW 43.21C.030(2)(c). This decision was made after a review of a completed environmental checklist and other information on file with SPR. This information is available to the public on request.
The Determination of Non-Significance (DNS) was issued on June 15, 2023.
