Outdoor Pickleball Planning

Updated: March 19, 2024

Spring 2024

The 2021-2022 Outdoor Pickleball Study evaluated SPR sites for the potential to support dedicated pickleball courts. Based on established selection criteria, the following five locations were identified for further analysis:

  • North: Bitter Lake Reservoir Lid Open Space; Warren G. Magnuson Park
  • South: Genesee Park; Georgetown Playfield; Hiawatha Playfield

The next step in developing dedicated pickleball courts is to conduct detailed analyses and select two sites – one each in north and south Seattle. In July 2023 a consultant design team was selected to guide public engagement, conduct site analyses, and create a schematic design for the two sites.

SPR is currently working with the consultant team to scope the technical and community engagement work necessary to design and build two facilities by the end of Seattle Park District Cycle 2, including the locations that will best support dedicated pickleball courts.

The detailed analyses will include:

  • Reviewing participant parking, traffic circulation and access, noise related to pickleball play, site utilities, and drainage, etc.
  • Identifying issues about how sites could be constructed relative to costs.
  • Developing estimated construction costs; and selecting two sites for future development depending upon funding.
  • Ongoing community engagement through Summer 2024.
