Greenwood Park Addition

Updated: July 30, 2020

Summer 2020

Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent cut a celebratory ribbon at the park on Friday, May 15, 2020 and announced Greenwood Park addition is open. Blank manilla tags are on the fencing surrounding the main lawn area and the community is encouraged to draw on the tags or write a message about what the new park space means to them. We would like to thank the Greenwood community for the collaboration on the design.

Delivery of the site furnishings has been delayed due to the COVID-19 impacts. We are still waiting on trash receptacles. The tetherball, ping pong equipment and cornhole bags will be provided when those activities are allowed by the City. The lawn areas are temporarily fenced to allow the grass to establish. In the meantime, please remember to practice social distancing while in all Seattle parks. Help us keep the parks open!

Fall 2019

Our Planning and Development Division awarded the construction contract for the Greenwood Park Addition to Green Tech Excavation. Work began in late September and the project will be complete in early 2020. Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) purchased this .1-acre property in 2013 to expand Greenwood Park and provide additional open space for the community. The design reflects input from the community and has a "game" theme with a ping pong tables, corn hole, 4-square, hopscotch, and tether ball. The sport court will be striped for pickleball and will be open during construction. The project incorporates accessibility features in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and features a wood arbor connection to the P-Patch, a hillside slide into the play area, picnic area with BBQ, and skate elements.

Thank you to the community for your patience. The contracting and award process took longer than anticipated due to an incomplete low bid.

Summer 2019

Thank you to everyone for your feedback on the preferred schematic plan. We heard from many of you that the plan needed a skate element and we have included that update with skate benches to the north of the sport court. We also have added a hillside slide that will connect the play area to the upper park.

The new additions pushed the schedule slightly. We are finalizing our construction documents and anticipate starting construction this summer.

Seattle Parks and Recreation staff thank everyone who attended the three 2018 meetings and participated in the online survey. Your input, feedback and ideas were very useful. Meeting and survey documents are available below.

The Greenwood Park Addition project is located at 8805 Fremont Avenue N, 98103. With community support, Seattle Parks and Recreation purchased the additional property in 2013 to provide additional open space for the community.
