Safer crossings and public art

Last updated: September 6, 2017

Signal
On N 92nd looking west across Aurora

What's happening now?

We’re happy to report that the pedestrian signal on Aurora at N 92nd was turned on yesterday, in time for the start of school today.

All streets, crossings, and sidewalks are also now open. There’s some additional work that needs to be completed and you can expect to see crews in the area for the next couple of weeks.

Thank you again for your patience as we completed this work.

WSDOT’s SR 99 paving project

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will pave Aurora Ave N (SR 99) between Roy St and N 145th St. This work is scheduled to begin in spring 2018. For more information on this work, visit WSDOT’s project website.

Project overview

In 2016, the Aurora Ave N Corridor Improvements project was one of 12 selected by the Levy to Move Seattle Oversight Committee to be funded through SDOT’s Neighborhood Street Fund (NSF) program. The NSF program funds projects requested by the community.

Aurora Ave N is heavily trafficked and difficult to cross. This project is crucial to improving safety for students walking and biking to and from Robert Eagle Staff Middle School, Cascadia Elementary, and Licton Springs K-8.

Elements

  • A new signal on Aurora Ave N at N 92nd St for people walking and biking
  • Modified curb ramps on Aurora Ave N at N 92nd St
  • A median island at Aurora Ave N and N 92nd St to help reduce cut-through traffic and encourage walking and biking to school
  • Public art on Aurora Ave N between N 85th St and N 105th St

Benefits

  • Enhances safety for people crossing Aurora Ave N at N 92nd St
  • Supports the planned Safe Routes to School connection between existing neighborhood greenway on Fremont Ave N and Robert Eagle Staff Middle School, Cascadia Elementary School, and Licton Springs K-8
  • Adds visual identity for the Aurora-Licton Urban Village

The levy includes $24 million to continue the Neighborhood Street Fund program over the nine years.

Get involved

We’ve been coordinating outreach with the North Seattle Neighborhood Greenways & School Safety Project. This included an outreach event on Thursday, February 9. The display boards from the event can be viewed here.

There will be additional ways to engage with the project team through the design process this year, including opportunities to interact with the artist as art concepts are developed.
