Bailey Gatzert Elementary Pedestrian Improvements

Updated: August 20, 2018

What’s happening now?

Construction starts as soon as Tuesday, August 21

Full closure of S Washington St between 14th Ave S and 15th Ave S is needed to install new lighting along 14th Ave S. In order to complete the work, we’ll need to dig across S Washington St to access the electrical lines. The closure will be in place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for up to 4 weeks. You can expect sidewalk closures on the southeast corner of S. Washington St and 14th Ave S, but local access and alternate pedestrian routes will be maintained. Crew flaggers will be present during construction.

During this work we’ll install:

  • A concrete curb bulb and ADA accessible curb ramps at the intersection of S Washington St and 14th Ave S
  • A new school sign at the intersection of Boren Ave and S Main St to better identify the Bailey Gatzert Elementary school zone
  • A beacon on the speed limit sign on 12th Ave S between Boren Ave and S Main St
  • New street lighting along 14th Ave S
  • New landscaping at the intersection of S Washington St and 14th Ave S, to be planted during the fall planting season

What to expect during construction

  • Work will last approximately 4 weeks
  • Temporary road, crosswalk, and sidewalk closures
  • Parking and loading restrictions
  • Detoured walking and biking routes
  • Noise, dust, truck activity and vibration

Project Funding

Funding comes from the 2015 voter-approved, nine-year Levy to Move Seattle, which will improve safety for all travelers, maintain streets and bridges, and invest in reliable, affordable travel options for a growing city. The levy includes $24 million to continue the Neighborhood Street Fund program over the nine years.

This project will also receive funding from SDOT’s Safe Routes to School Program, which makes it easier and safer for students to walk and bike around Seattle.
