Safe Routes to School: Dunlap Elementary School

Updated: March 30, 2020

What’s happening now?

Thank you S Rose St neighbors for your survey responses and in-person input about the S Rose St Sidewalk options. Here is an interim update on the lastest status:

What we heard: We had good turnout for both the online survey (open mid-Oct through December 1) and the in-person event - reaching approximately 50 people total. We heard varied responses ranging from enthusiasm for closing the block to major concerns with closing the block.

Design update: Based on your feedback regarding neighborhood access for people walking and driving, we're looking beyond the two main options that we originally presented (outlined in this mailer). The new possibilities would still accomplish the main goal of the project: to create a safer, more comfortable walking connection to Dunlap Elementary School and other destinations such as light rail and transit. We will share an update once we have more details on the feasibility of the new concepts we're studying.

Project Overview

As part of the Safe Routes to School programwe're in the design phase to make improvements such as new sidewalks, curb bulbs, and trail connections to make it safer and easier for kids to walk and bike to school. Our focus areas are:

  • Crossing improvements at Rainier and Rose (planned for 2020)
  • Walking/biking connection on S Rose St between 46th and 48th (planned for 2021)
  • Crossing, sidewalk, and Chief Sealth Trail connection improvements on Kenyon near Wing Luke Elementary (section by Wing Luke planned for 2020 and the rest scheduled for 2021)

Crossing, sidewalks, and Chief Sealth Trail connection improvements on Kenyon near Wing Luke Elementary (planned for 2020/2021).

Wing Luke Elementary is currently under construction and will reopen for the start of school in January 2021. Their redevelopment project includes a new sidewalk on the south side of S Kenyon St between 37th Ave S and Kenyon Way S. Our Safe Routes to School projects includes a new sidewalk on the north side of S Kenyon St.

This project is in coordination with improvements to the Rainier and Rose intersection as part of Rainier Corridor Improvements – Phase 2 and Rainier Transit-Plus Multimodal Corridor. Based on community input we're building a full (4-way) signal - see details here.

We’re currently in the design phase. We completed design in 2019, and we expect to construct the improvements in summer 2020/2021.

We’re in the planning phase, so we’d love to hear your feedback on improvements you’d like to see. Please email or call with your thoughts or to set up a meeting: Lisa Harrison;; 206-684-0392.
