NE 70th St and I-5 Crossing Improvements

Updated: June 19, 2019

What’s happening now?

Work on a new all way stop and curb ramps at the intersection of 8th Ave NE and NE 70th St has been temporarily put on hold. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is working to finalize changes to the overpass with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). Once WSDOT issues final approval, construction will begin on the overpass and intersection will begin.

Once construction begins, traffic will be reduced to one lane on 8th Ave NE when necessary for construction. Flaggers will assist motorist and pedestrians through the work zone. Work is expected to last 4-6 weeks. Crews will also return to add a new protected bike lane and pedestrian lane to the NE 70th St overpass. Striping is expected to take 1 to 2 days. Traffic on the overpass will be reduced to one lane during painting. Flaggers will assist motorists and pedestrians through the work zone.

Striping crews will also revise the reconfigured parking on NE 70th St between 8th Ave NE and Roosevelt Way NE. Additional striping at the corner of parking spaces will be added to clarify legal parking spaces and ensure that residents can access their driveways. Cars will not be allowed to park on the street during the revision of striping. "No Parking" signs will be placed at least 48 hours before the start of work. During striping, there will be temporary lane closures; they are expected to last no more than a few hours at one location.

Crews will also revise the previously built curb ramp at the corner of 6th Ave NE and NE 71st St to ensure that it meets Americans with Disability Act (ADA) standards. The curb ramp will be lengthened and softer material will be added to its sides. To facilitate the work, 6th Ave NE will be closed on the south side of NE 71st St for 1 to 3 weeks. Local residents will be detoured to 5th Ave NE. NE 71st St, where it becomes NE 70th St, will be reduced to one lane when necessary; flaggers will direct traffic.

Project Overview

Crossing improvements for people walking, biking, and driving are coming to NE 70th St between 6th Ave NE and 12th Ave NE. Improvements between 6th Ave NE and 8th Ave NE were requested by the community as part of the City's Neighborhood Street Fund (NSF). These improvements include new all-way stops at the intersections of NE 70th St at 8th Ave NE and 6th Ave NE, new crosswalks, a walkway, and protected bike lanes in both directions. We're also adding a protected bike lane on the south side of NE 70th St between 8th Ave NE and 12th Ave NE, and adding a neighborhood greenway connection on NE 70th between 12th Ave NE and 15th Ave NE. To facilitate the new bike lanes, parking will be consolidated to the south side of NE 70th St between 8th Ave NE and Roosevelt Way NE and removed between Roosevelt Way NE and 12th Ave NE on both sides of the street. Driveway access will be maintained.
