NE Northlake Way Sidewalk Project

Project Description

Northlake Way has a new sidewalk! This project:

• added 2 blocks of new sidewalk on the north side of NE Northlake Way between 7th Ave NE and Eastlake Ave NE and 1 block on the south side of NE Northlake Way, between 7th Ave NE and Eastlake Ave NE
• constructed new sidewalk corners and curb ramps at the intersections of NE Northlake Way and 7th Ave NE, 8th Ave NE, and Eastlake Ave NE
• extended the westbound bike lane to 7th Ave NE
• conserved on-street parking on the north side of NE Northlake Way, converting the spots from back-in to parallel parking

NE Northlake Way is a major arterial and major truck street that lacked sidewalks in the project area. This area of NE Northlake Way is home to a small business district including maritime businesses, service shops, and restaurants. This sidewalk was a high priority in SDOT’s pedestrian Master Plan and now connects NE Northlake Way with existing sidewalk on NE Pacific St and the sidewalk network near the University of Washington campus.

Benefits

Sidewalks are the building blocks of our pedestrian network and we’re adding to this network, one block at a time. They create a safer, more accessible, and more comfortable environment for people walking. Sidewalks create a designated walking space, which helps improve safety and predictability for all travelers.

This project is funded through SDOT’s Sidewalk Development Program, with funds from the Levy to Move Seattle. Approved by voter in 2015, the 9-year $930 million Levy to Move Seattle provides funding to improve safety for all travelers, maintain our streets and bridges, and invest in reliable, affordable travel options for a growing city, Learn more about the levy.

Outreach

Sidewalks often mark the boundary between private property and the public right of way so building new sidewalk requires extensive coordination with adjacent properties. We’ve worked closely with property owners and residents in the project area throughout the project’s design. As we approach construction, our outreach team will provide notification of construction impacts, schedule, and sequencing.
