25th Avenue NE Paving Project

Updated: March 20, 2017

Project update: Construction now scheduled for early 2018

We are now planning to begin paving activities on 25th Ave NE in early 2018. Starting work in early 2018 will allow contractors to take advantage of better weather and limit the impact and inconvenience of the construction. Construction was initially planned to begin in the fall of 2017.

This summer we will begin our pre-construction outreach to the businesses and residents in the area. If you'd like an update before then, do not hesitate to contact us via email or phone (see below).

Thank you!

Background

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) plans to resurface about 4.4 miles of 25th Avenue NE between Montlake Boulevard NE and NE 65th St. As part of the resurfacing, crews will grind off the old road surface, place new asphalt and repaint the lane striping.

The project will also:

  • Install or upgrade curb ramps to be compliant with the American Disability Act (ADA)
  • Relocate pedestrian push buttons to accommodate ADA curb ramps
  • Install a new pedestrian push button crossing at NE 47th St adjacent to the University Village entrance.
  • Replace traffic detection loops that control the signals
crosswalk Street

This project is currently in design. As we get closer to finalizing the design, we will begin engaging businesses and residents about the project.

Each year, SDOT resurfaces a number of the City's arterials, determining which streets should be repaved on the basis of traffic volumes and the current condition of the road.

Called a "mill and overlay" project, the contractor will grind off the top two inches of existing road surface, make any needed repairs to the road base below, and then repave with new asphalt. This work is expected to extend the life of the street for another 10-12 years, and will provide a smoother driving experience.

This maintenance work does not preclude us from returning later to make additional improvements to 25th Ave NE.
