Major Projects SDOT is making real progress on our vision of a regional multi-modal transportation system, linked by transportation hubs at Westlake, King Street Station and Colman Dock. To learn more about the status of major projects continue reading.Fremont Bridge Replacement of the Fremont Bridge north and south approaches and upgrades to the mechanical and electrical system is scheduled to finish summer 2007. The $38 million project replaces the raised road at each end of the moveable bridge originally built in 1917. The Fremont neighborhood will also enjoy improved mobility as a result of traffic circulation changes included in the project. North Link Light Rail When it is complete, North Link will provide a comfortable and convenient travel option for people who live and work in the area between downtown and Northgate. North Link will connect four urban centers to the initial segment - Downtown Seattle, Capitol Hill, The University District, and Northgate. When complete, some 150,000 daily commuters are expected to board light rail saving users over 20,000 hours of travel time each weekday. Funding for the North Link is included in the Road and Transit 2007 ballot measure. Magnolia Bridge Replacement One of three main links between Magnolia, Queen Anne, and the rest of Seattle, the Magnolia Bridge was damaged in a 1997 landslide, and again in the 2001 earthquake and must be replaced or rehabilitated. In November of 2006, a preferred replacement alternative was selected. The bridge will be designed using concrete box girders supported by columns that flare out at the top. SDOT continues to pursue funding sources for this important project. Center City Major Projects SDOT is creating a premier transportation system to help coordinate and manage growth. Our goal is to develop a system so that those who must drive can easily access downtown and those who choose not to drive have choices. Center City Major Projects are being phased to minimize impacts and to prepare for the replacement of the damaged Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall. |
