Chief Sealth High School Walkway Improvements

Project Updates

Updated Design

In the original design concept we shared this spring, we planned to include a paved walkway on 25th Ave SW between SW Trenton and SW Cloverdale streets, in addition to a paved walkway at 26th Ave SW. This was removed because of the likelihood that a developer will submit a permit for construction on the east side of 25th Ave SW in the relatively near future. The developer would be required, per the Citys Land Use Code, to construct similar right-of-way improvements. While it could still be several years before this development occurs, the high likelihood of this occurring means its not a good location to invest public funds.

We recognize that this is unwelcome news to some of you who looked forward to the improvements on 25th Ave SW. While it could still be several years before this development takes place, the high likelihood of its occurring means that investing public funds at this location would not be prudent.

We will continue to advance the project and improve the walkway on 26th Ave SW.

Project Description

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will improve connectivity, walkability, and safety for residents and students who currently use the unimproved and overgrown path on 26th Ave SW, between SW Trenton S. In 2016, the Chief Sealth High School Walkway project was one of 12 selected by the Levy to Move Seattle Oversight Committee to be funded through the SDOTs Neighborhood Street Fund (NSF) program. The NSF program funds projects requested by the community.

Project Funding

Funding comes from the 2015 voter-approved, nine-year Levy to Move Seattle, which will improve safety for all travelers, maintain streets and bridges, and invest in reliable, affordable travel options for a growing city. The levy includes $24 million to continue the Neighborhood Street Fund program over the nine years.
