Be Prepared

Take Winter by Storm!

Remember that storms can happen all year long, so be prepared! Be aware that flooding can affect you no matter where you live, but especially if your home is in a low-lying area, near a river or creek, or below street level. Find out all the things you can do to be prepared at Take Winter By Storm.

In the fall, keep leaves and debris out of drains

Consider adopting your local storm drains. You can prevent flooding by keeping the drains in your neighborhood clear of debris. Clear your drain only if it is safe. If it is still clogged after you’ve removed the debris, please submit a clogged drain report.

From November 1st to 30th, you can set out up to 10 extra bags of leaves for free pick up on your collection day.

In winter, keep snow and ice from blocking drains

After snowfall, melting snow and rain can block storm drain inlets and cause localized flooding. You can prevent flooding or ponding in your neighborhood by safely removing snow and ice from your local storm drain.

When clearing drains, safety is key. To safely clear your local drain, stand on the sidewalk or parking strip (not in the road!) and use a snow shovel to clear the snow and ice away. If you don’t have a snow shovel, you can use a garden shovel or a rake. Even a dustpan will do. If it is still blocked after you’ve removed the snow and ice, submit a clogged drain report.
