Protecting Hotel Employees from Injury Ordinance Q & A

The Protecting Hotel Employees from Injury Ordinance

This law limits the workload of hourly employees who clean the guest rooms of a covered hotel or motel.  The law seeks to reduce the frequency and occurrence of injuries associated with room cleaning.

The law restricts the amount of floor space that an employee can clean in a day, creates consent requirements for team cleaning, and requires premium pay if an employee cleans more than the law's limit.

This law covers hourly employees that work at a Seattle hotel or motel of 100 or more rooms.  Hourly employees are those employees who are entitled to Seattle's Minimum Wage.

Covered employers are:

  • those that own, control, or operate a covered hotel or motel of 100 or more guest rooms; and
  • those employers who contract with a covered hotel or motel to clean its guest rooms.
