Recycling Rates

Recycling service is included in the garbage rate to Seattle residents. There is no additional cost for recycling service for residents.

For single-family residents, households receive one 96-gallon recycling cart for every-other-week collection. Residents can request an additional 96-gallon cart if needed. For multi-family properties, view recycling information specific to apartments and condos.

Seattle recycles about 60% of municipal solid waste and aims to recycle 70% by 2022.

Recycling:

  • protects and expands U.S. manufacturing jobs and increases U.S. competitiveness
  • reduces the need for landfills and incineration
  • prevents pollution caused by the manufacturing of products from virgin materials
  • saves energy
  • decreases emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate change
  • conserves natural resources such as timber, water, and minerals
  • helps sustain the environment for future generations
