Marbled Murrelet Studies

We conducted radar surveys in several locations in the watershed

From 2005 to 2007 we conducted baseline surveys for marbled murrelets within the municipal watershed using both standard audio-visual techniques as well as ornithological radar. We documented low numbers of murrelets flying over the watershed during all three years. Two patches of old-growth forest in the upper watershed were found to be occupied, very likely by nesting murrelets. View these survey reports on the marbled murrelet species web page.

We also evaluated potential marbled murrelet habitat in second-growth forest stands. No sites were found that contained adequate nesting habitat and density of suitable nesting platforms. In 2010 we implemented an experimental research project to enhance potential marbled murrelet nesting habitat in selected second-growth forests within the watershed.
