Seattle uses cameras to help keep people safe on the roads.

School Zone Speed 

  • The speed limit is 20 MPH near elementary and middle schools.
  • Speed cameras are in use when the school zone lights are flashing.
  • The Seattle Department of Transportation decides the times based on when students arrive and leave school. 

Red Lights 

  • Cameras help make sure drivers stop at red lights.
  • This helps prevent crashes. 

Special Lanes 

  • Cameras check for people driving in HOV, bike, or bus lanes when they should not. 

Blocking the Box 

  • It is against city rules to stop your car in the middle of an intersection and block traffic.
  • Cameras help enforce this rule. 

Camera tickets are filed with Seattle Municipal Court. 
They are treated like parking tickets. They do not go on your driving record. 
But unpaid tickets may cause the Department of Licensing to put a hold on your vehicle registration.

If You Have Limited Income 

  • You may get 50% off your ticket if all of these are true:  
  • This is your first traffic camera ticket, or it happened within 21 days of your first camera ticket.
  • You get state financial assistance under RCW Title 74 or the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program.
  • You are the registered owner of the vehicle.
  • You admit you committed the violation. 

If your request is approved: 

  • The court will tell you the new amount and due date.
  • You cannot ask for a hearing. 

If your request is denied:

  • The court will tell you your hearing options and new due date. 
    This reduction is not available for tickets already paid or decided. 

How to Request the Reduction Online 

  1. Register on the court’s public portal.
  2. After you register, log in.
  3. Select “Search for Records.”
  4. Choose “Citation Search.”
  5. Type your Notice Number in the Citation Number box.
  6. Click “Search.”
  7. Click your Case Number.
  8. Click “Actions.”
  9. Select “Create Filing.”
  10. Choose “Guided Entry.”
  11. Choose “Submit Request for 1st Traffic Camera Reduction.”
  12. Follow the instructions. 

If You Were Not Driving 

You can file a declaration of non-responsibility. This is a signed statement that says you were not driving the vehicle at the time. You can file online, or download and send the form by: 

Companies and employers cannot file declarations. 
The form must arrive by the due date on the Notice of Infraction. 
The court may cancel the ticket or schedule a hearing, depending on your violation history.
