Violent Crimes Victim Advocates

The Violent Crimes Victim Advocates provide support and resources to victims and their families throughout the criminal justice system process, from the time the case is assigned to a detective through the adjudication of any criminal charges that may be filed. These Advocates work closely with the Homicide/Assault Unit of the Seattle Police Department, acting as a liaison with the detectives and prosecutors. The Advocates update families and victims on the status of the investigation and court proceedings. Once charges are filed, they track the different phases of the court proceedings, update everyone involved, and/or attend critical hearings with (or on behalf of) the family/victim.

The Violent Crimes Advocates strive to ensure that victims and their families have access to community resources, victim benefits, and critical services for shelter, transportation, interpreters, and education on victimization and trauma issues.

Advocacy services may include:

  • providing information about Crime Victims Compensation burial benefits and assisting with the application process;
  • providing information about the Medical Examiner's Office and supplying a list of funeral homes if needed;
  • grief/trauma support counseling;
  • interceding in media requests; and
  • assisting in returning non-evidentiary property to the victim's family.

In cases where a suspect has been identified, the Advocate will provide information about the jail inmate notification/registration program (VINE) where they can register to be notified if the custody status of the Defendant changes.
