Prior Climate Action Planning

In 2011, the Mayor and City Council adopted a bold climate protection goal for the community to become carbon neutral by 2050 and directed the creation of a plan to meet the goal (Resolution 31312).

2013 Climate Action Plan:

The resulting 2013 Climate Action Plan (CAP), which was published in 2013, outlines strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote climate resilience, focusing on transportation, building energy, and waste management. It includes goals to reduce emissions by 2030 and 2050, emphasizing community equity and economic prosperity. The plan also addresses the need for climate adaptation, particularly in response to rising sea levels and extreme weather events.

Seattle’s Office of Sustainability and Environment engaged grassroots sustainability groups, environmental leaders and business and community members from across the city to develop the plan. The City also formed Technical Advisory Groups in each sector addressed in the Plan and convened a Green Ribbon Commission to recommend specific climate actions.

2018 Climate Action Strategy

In April 2018, Mayor Jenny A. Durkan released an updated  Seattle climate strategy  to reduce carbon pollution from transportation and building sectors and make Seattle a national leader in fighting climate change.
