Sign Inspections
What Is It?
After you install a sign, you must schedule an inspection. Some signs also need footing or special inspections (structural or geotechnical) during construction. All sign installations require a final inspection before your permit expires.
Footing Inspection. You need a footing inspection for every ground sign or pole sign before you pour the concrete foundation or footing. Special inspection. Some projects may need a special inspection if a technical expert is required to review the structure or soil conditions. We will give you a special inspection schedule form if your project requires one. You must send documentation from each special inspection to the sign inspector before you request a final inspection.
Special inspections may be required for:
- structural fabrication or connection methods
- soil conditions that affect safety
- elements that add load or increase risk to the structure
The project engineer or SDCI will determine whether your sign needs special inspection.
Final inspection. Request your final inspection within three days of completing installation, or within 24 hours of energizing an electrical sign. “Energizing” means turning on electrical power for the first time. During the final inspection, we confirm your installation matches the approved plans and all applicable codes.
You must pass a final inspection for all sign, awning, canopy, outline lighting, or border tube installations before your permit expires. If your permit expires first, you may need to reestablish your permit and pay a fee. If too much time has passed, you’ll need a new permit that complies with current regulations.
How to Schedule
- Request your inspection before 7 AM on the day you need it.
- Have your permit number ready when you request the inspection.
- If your installation includes a foundation, schedule your footing inspection at least 24 hours before you pour the concrete.
