35th Ave SW Road Safety Corridor Project

Construction Update

We expect the signal installation at 35th Ave SW/SW Dawson St to be completed this winter, along with temporary striping. You may see crews in the area as soon as late January. This work is weather dependent.

Once installation of the signal is fully complete, we will complete permanent striping of the new crosswalks, install any needed signage, and restore disturbed landscaping later this spring. For questions or comments, contact us at 684-ROAD@seattle.gov or 206-684-7623.

The work at 35th Ave SW and SW Juneau St and 35th Ave SW and SW Kenyon St is nearly complete. You may also see crews completing final installation of striping, landscaping, and moving equipment along with the crosswalk striping work at 35th Ave SW/SW Dawson St.

Project Overview

The 35th Ave SW Safety Corridor Project is currently in Phase 2 and we’re excited to continue installing safety enhancements. After the Phase 1 redesign, speeding dropped by an average of 42%. At the end of July 2018, we began to implement operational changes at 35th Ave SW and SW Juneau St. The upgrades include:

• Turn restrictions at SW Juneau St
• Left turn lanes along 35th Ave SW
• No parking signs will be installed to make room for the turn lanes (see the graphic below for exact locations of future signs) and where restrictions will occur

Phase 2

Since 2015 we’ve committed to reviewing conditions along 35th Avenue SW and collaborating with the community to find solutions to safety challenges. Safety is our number one priority, and this project helps us reach our 2030 Vision Zero goal of zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries. This project will address one of the top streets in the city for serious crashes and will enhance access to along and across the street and to destinations like parks, libraries, schools, and shopping.

Phase 2 Project Scope

We’re excited to continue our work to install additional safety enhancements including pavement repairs, crossing improvements, and new signals. Below are the major upgrades we’ll be installing in 2019 (see map for further details):

• New left turn signals at SW Barton St
• New signal at SW Dawson St with new curb ramps and pavement repair
• New turn restrictions, curb ramps, and pavement repair at S W Juneau St
• New curb ramps and pavement repair at SW Kenyon St
• New signal with pedestrian and bicycle crossing improvements at SW Graham St as part of the West Seattle Neighborhood Greenway (2019)

Project Schedule

Construction will begin in 2019 with. Following completion, we’ll monitor the corridor and begin outreach on a 36th Avenue SW Neighborhood Greenway connection to Camp Long.

2. Provide predictable and efficient travel for people driving and taking transit
3. Enhance pedestrian access to key destinations along the street
