Growing a Transit-Oriented Neighborhood around Light Rail

Collaborating with communities along the Delridge corridor on a vision for growth and mobility around new light rail stations.

About the project

The community and City collaborated on a vision for community development in the 2018 North Delridge Action Plan. As we plan for new light rail stations, the City and community will work together to update the vision and action plan and identify strategies to grow Delridge as a transit-oriented neighborhood for current and future generations.

This planning effort will result in a Transit-Oriented Community Action Plan that provides a framework for guiding positive change and development through long-range strategies and short-term actions that implement the community’s vision and priorities.

Project Updates

Take our 15 minute survey to share your insights and let us know what your priorities are for your neighborhood as we plan for growth. This input will help shape strategies around housing, transportation, places for community to gather, safe streets, job access, and local business districts.

Get Involved

We are in the first phase of the project and are focused on connecting with community-based organizations and City departments who will collaborate on this project. We are hearing from community members and organizations about the work they’re already doing and looking for ways community planning can help build on these efforts.

Past Planning Efforts

North Delridge Action Plan (2014)

Background

Delridge is a culturally rich and diverse neighborhood with strong community ties and a deep history of organizing. Residents are proud of their cultural institutions, environmental stewardship of Longfellow Creek, and communities built around mutual support and love for their communities.

The station area planning process will be grounded in building upon existing community assets—like the cultural and recreational facilities, Longfellow Creek, and existing community organizations—and understanding community-identified needs around housing, safe streets, job access, and local businesses. Through this work, we will collaborate with community to plan for future growth that serves current and future generations in ways that leverage access to light rail.

The community and City collaborated on a vision for community development in the 2018 North Delridge Action Plan; this work seeks to update that community vision and identify strategies for leveraging investments in light rail to address community priorities. As the Delridge Station aims to serve the surrounding neighborhood and the neighborhoods along the Delridge corridor to the south of the station area, this work will expand the scope of the planning effort to include the priorities of communities up and down the corridor.

South Delridge Planning efforts are being incorporated into Delridge Station Area Planning. If you’ve contributed to the South Delridge Planning work, we will be building on what we heard from you already!

Station Area and Study Area

We are focusing primarily on the station area which is about a half-mile walk from the proposed light rail station. In this area we will focus on opportunities for growth, walkability, and community essentials. We will also look at a larger study area to identify improvements to make new stations more easily accessible by bus, bike, and vehicles.

What makes a neighborhood Transit-Oriented?

Transit-oriented neighborhoods make it easy and enjoyable for people of all ages to get to where they need to go by walking, biking, or taking transit. These are inclusive, connected, mixed-use communities with a variety of housing types, thriving businesses, walkable streets, lively public spaces, and an emphasis on sustainable forms of moving around.

As light rail stations are built into existing neighborhoods, we will work with communities to enhance what is already there and identify community needs while supporting citywide goals:

Walkable and connected streets: Streets and transit designed for safe, easy, and enjoyable access for everyone.

Housing for all: A mix of housing types, including affordable housing and housing for families and seniors.

Strong local economy: Support existing businesses and create new opportunities for jobs and services within walking distance of more households.

Inviting public spaces: A network of welcoming places for people, public art, culture, and connection.

Healthy, resilient communities: Promote social connection, environmental sustainability, and community well-being.
