Fighting for Statewide Reforms

How you can help

Right now, we are trying to make sure the City of Seattle uses its resources to fight for these community priorities. If you want to make sure Seattle does that, you should send an email or call the mayor and your councilmember.

It's quicker and easier than you think. All you have to do is say something like:

"Hello. My name is (your name here) and I live in (your neighborhood here). I'm (calling/writing) to ask that you commit to including the Community Police Commission's eight recommendations in the City's state legislative agenda. That includes:

  • Removing police accountability from the bargaining process
  • Removing arbitration as a route of appeal for police misconduct
  • Repairing Washington's broken decertification system
  • Creating truly independent investigation requirements
  • Banning tear gas in Washington State
  • Ending qualified immunity
  • Creating a strong "duty to intervene" for officers who witness police misconduct
  • Making sure community has a voice in statewide police training and reform

Changing these state laws is crucial to ensuring we can implement a strong police accountability system here in Seattle and across Washington State."
