Side Sewer Inspections

What Is It?

Our side sewer inspections are based on the work you are doing. At a minimum, you need to do the following before the inspector arrives:

  • Bed all newly installed pipe with 5/8 clear crushed gravel (also known as Type 22), with the pipe still visible and the pipe material stamp facing up.
  • Pressure test sanitary pipe more than 10-feet long and any storm drain pipe in the right-of-way. The test must be ready for the inspection (see Section V.Q of Director’s Rule 4-2011, Requirements for Design & Construction of Side Sewers).
  • Complete an as-built drawing of all newly installed pipe, even if the new pipe is in the same location as the old pipe.

We may inspect other parts of your side sewer work, depending on your project. For example, if your project is associated with a construction permit and includes “On-Site Stormwater Management,” such as rain gardens and permeable pavement, we also inspect these features.

When to Schedule

You need an inspection before you cover your side sewer pipe or add gravel or soil elements of the On-Site Stormwater Management requirements. These specifics can be pre-determined by your inspector.

How to Schedule

  • Request an inspection online.
  • Call our 24-hour automated inspection request line at (206) 684-8900 with your permit number, name, and phone number. If you call before 7:00 a.m., we usually inspect your project the same day. If you call after 7:00 a.m., we schedule your inspection for the following workday. Don’t use a cell phone to schedule an inspection. Your call may drop out before you complete it.
  • Contact Customer Support at (206) 684-8950 during business hours.
  • If you need to cancel a scheduled inspection call (206) 684-8950.

Our inspectors can be reached between 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. By contacting your inspector, you can work out the details of your inspection.

After hours inspections. We do not inspect projects before 7:30 a.m. or after 4:30 p.m. on weekdays or anytime on Saturday, Sunday and holidays. However, we can inspect your work outside of our business hours in special circumstances such as a large project with site constraints or road closures which limit our time to inspect during our business hours. You need to ask us 72 hours in advance and we schedule your inspection when our inspectors are available. Call us at (206) 684-8950 or contact your site inspector.
