9100
ANNEXED CITIES

Seattle annexed eight small municipalities between 1905 and 1910, nearly doubling the City's physical size. Annexations by law were initiated by the annexee and had to be approved by the Seattle City Council. The need for inexpensive and accessible electric power and water system services were the primary motivations for the annexation movements.

9106
Ballard

The Town of Ballard was incorporated in January 1890 and achieved City of the third class status eleven months later. The demand for better municipal services and an unfavorable water contract with Seattle created an annexation movement in Ballard in 1905. One attempt at annexation was defeated by the electorate that year, but a second vote in 1907 was favorable. Ballard consolidated with Seattle on May 29, 1907, and became a separate ward of the City.
