Candidate Timeline

Here are key program dates for candidates who are interested in qualifying for the Democracy Voucher Program.

January 1, 2016

Seattle Election Cycle Begins

Once candidates register and sign the program pledge agreeing to abide by the rules of the program, they may begin collecting qualifying signatures and contributions until June 2, 2017.

July 1, 2016

Candidate Registration Packets Accepted

July 1, 2016 is the first day candidates may submit the Democracy Voucher Program registration packet. The packet includes qualifying contributions, signed petitions, list of filed C-3s and program pledge. The last day to submit the candidate pledge is June 2, 2017.

January 3, 2017

Open Enrollment for Seattle Residents Begins

Vouchers were mailed to registered voters beginning January 3. The Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission will periodically distribute vouchers to newly registered voters until October 1, 2017.

Democracy Vouchers may be collected but not redeemed until after qualifying contributions and signatures have been verified by the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission.

January 19, 2017

120 Day Residency Requirement for City Council

You must be a resident of Seattle by this date before filing your Declaration of Candidacy in order to be a Seattle City Council candidate.

May 15-19, 2017

Candidate Filing Week

All candidates must file a Declaration of Candidacy with King County Elections.

June 2, 2017

Deadline for Candidates to Enter the Program

Last day for candidates to submit their Democracy Voucher Program pledge to the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission.

August 1, 2017

Primary Election Day

October 1, 2017

Last Day to Issue Democracy Vouchers

Last day the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission may issue Democracy Vouchers to newly registered voters. Thereafter, Democracy Vouchers will be issued to Seattle residents who apply for the program.

November 7, 2017

General Election Day

November 30, 2017

Deadline for Seattle Residents to Assign Vouchers

Vouchers must be dated on or before this day to be redeemed.

December 1, 2017

Deadline for Campaigns to Submit Democracy Vouchers to the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission

Last day candidates may submit assigned Democracy Vouchers to the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission.
