When you are renting a home to a tenant you are responsible for making sure that the unit is safe and up to code. The minimum standards are contained in the Housing and Building Maintenance Code.

  Habitability standards cover minimum  

  • Space and Occupancy Standards
    These refer to minimum floor area for rooms, light (windows) and ventilation (fans) and sanitation (plumbing) .
  • Structural and Maintenance Standards
    These refer to foundations, roofs, chimneys, fireplaces, walls, weathertightness
  • Mechanical Standards
    These refer to heating, ventilation, electrical systems.
  • Fire and Safety
    These refer to stairs, exits, fire escapes, guardrails.
  • Security
    These refer to entry doors, windows, observation ports.
