Renter's Handbook

Landlords are required by law to give you a summary of rental rights and responsibilities with voter registration information attached also known as the Renter's Handbook when:

  • A new rental agreement is signed (printed copy required)
  • A rental agreement is renewed
  • Annually to month-by-month tenants
  • The City makes updates to the Renter's Handbook

The City's Renting in Seattle program produces the Renter's Handbook. The handbook summarizes rental regulations and outlines the obligations and responsibilities of both tenants and landlords. It also provides tips and best practices to help enhance the landlord/tenant relationship. Landlords must give you a paper copy when you sign your initial rental agreement. After you move in, they can send future copies to you by email.
