Employees who are police officers are referred to as sworn employees, because they swear an oath to serve the people by maintaining public order and enforcing the law.

The Department also has civilian employees who perform functions such as 9-1-1 calltakers, parking enforcement, maintaining criminal records and statistics, managing evidence, latent prints, information technology, and administrative support work.

Policing involves a chain-of-command, with sworn officers of higher rank giving direction to those working under them as follows.

  1. Chief of Police
  2. Deputy Chief
  3. Assistant Chief
  4. Captain
  5. Lieutenant
  6. Sergeant
  7. Officers and Detectives

Patrol Officers work 24/7 year round. Patrol Officers work on a rotating schedule that includes weekends and holidays, and officers are assigned to one of three watches:

  • First Watch: 03:30 - 12:30 (3-12 PM)
  • Second Watch: 11:30 - 20:30 (11-8 PM)
  • Third Watch: 19:30 - 04:30 (7-4 AM)
