More + -

Captain Mike Teeter grew up in the Seattle area. At the age of 18, he graduated from the University of Washington with Bachelor's Degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He then earned a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California, and worked in the computer engineering field for six years before joining the Seattle Police Department in 1992.

Captain Teeter started his police career as a patrol officer at the South Precinct. He moved to the traffic unit where he spent six years doing DUI and traffic enforcement, arresting over 1,000 impaired drivers. Captain Teeter was one of the first in our state to be certified as a Drug Recognition Expert, and instructed impaired driving enforcement to officers statewide.

Teeter promoted to Sergeant in 2001 and was assigned to OPA. From there, he moved to the Southwest Precinct and was part of the team that opened our newest precinct in 2003. Captain Teeter was promoted to Lieutenant in 2009 and was assigned to Human Resources. He served for a year as the Human Resources Director, and was also responsible for background investigations, recruiting, and assisting employees whose injuries and illnesses, both on-duty and off-duty, prevented them from working.

Teeter served a short stint as a watch commander at the West Precinct, before being selected to head the Force Investigation Team in February of 2014. As Captain of that team, he has worked closely with the Monitor, the Justice Department, officers and commanders throughout our department, and other stakeholders to refine SPD's processes for investigating our most serious use of force incidents.

Captain Teeter is a graduate of the Senior Management Institute for Police.
