Block Watch

Block watch in seattle

Block Watch is a program based on the principle that neighbors working together are the first and best line of defense against crime.  Block Watch has been shown to be an effective deterrent of crime at the neighborhood level.

The Seattle Police Block Watch Program began in 1972 and has seen significant involvement and success.  Seattle has always been recognized for its Block Watch program. Roughly 30% of Seattle neighborhoods are currently involved in Block Watch, compared to a national average of fewer than 11%.

How do I get a block watch started?

Is it a lot of work? What do I need to do first? What if I live in an apartment or condo? Where do we get one of those cool neighborhood watch signs to put up?

Become a block captain

How much of a time commitment is it? What are my responsibilities? Someone handed off the responsibility to me, what do I do now?

Keeping Block watch going

How often do we need to meet? How do we get someone to speak at a meeting? How do I revive my Block Watch?

Want to create a blog? Have someone speak at a meeting? Research crimes statistics? Learn more about your precinct? The Block Watch Captains' Toolkit captures a lot of useful information all in one spot, and we'll continue to keep adding to it.
