Description:
This small stature tree has purple – pink flowers in bud that open to a light pink. Little pruning is required, but if you must, prune in mid-summer to limit suckering.

Where to Plant:
Perfect for under power lines or in small yard spaces. Not appropriate for larger yard spaces or planting strips without overhead power lines.

Leaves:
Deciduous and green.

Flowers:
Purple-pink in bud to light pink when open. Strap like petals are similar to Star magnolia. Blooms before leaf emergence.

Fruit:
Pickle shaped pod that eventually turns red. Usually not present.

Preferred Site Conditions:
Full sun to light shade. Prefers moist but well drained soil.

Potential Problems:
No serious insect or disease problems.

  • 15 feet from house or building
  • 3 ½ feet back from the face of the curb
  • 5 feet from underground utility lines
  • 10 feet from power poles
  • 7 ½ feet from driveways (10 feet recommended)
