Description:
This enchanting cultivar of the Japanese snowbell has a more upright oval habit. The standout characteristic for this tree is the purple-green to maroon leaves that make a great backdrop for the showy white bell-shaped flowers. Attractive fruit in late summer adds to the beauty of this tree.

Where to Plant:
A perfect tree for smaller planting strips under power lines. Can also be used for small yard spaces.
Leaves:
Leaves emerge purple-maroon and can change to maroon-green. The purple will fade to dark green in shadier conditions.
Flowers:
White bell-shaped flowers in late spring are lightly fragrant and attract bees and hummingbirds. They really stand out against the purple foliage.
Fruit:
A gray-green, egg-shaped drupe that hangs from a long stem and matures in late summer. The darker calyx on top with its wavy margin, looks like a hat.
Preferred Site Conditions:
Prefers well-drained acidic soils but can tolerate sand or clay. Best grown in sun to part shade.
Potential Problems:
No serious insect or disease problems. Doesn't tolerate highly alkaline or heavily compacted soils.
