Puget Ridge Playground Renovation

Updated: February 16, 2021

Thank you, Seattle! This project is complete.

The renovated play area opened in early December 2019.

Fall 2019

Our contractors, L W Sundstrom, have been working hard to get this play area open for the community. Unfortunately, after the safety inspection of the play area it became apparent that the slide in the 5 - 12 age group elements had to be re-ordered and re-installed. We have ordered the slide and the contractor has assured us they will install it as soon as possible after it arrives. Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding during these last few weeks of construction.

Summer 2019

To increase project efficiencies, the E.C. Hughes and Puget Ridge Play Area renovation projects, both in West Seattle, publicly bid together. We recently awarded the construction contract to LW Sundstrom. Both renovation projects will include new play equipment with play structures accessible to children of all abilities, ages 2-5 and 5-12. Additionally, the projects will enhance safety and improve play area accessibility in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). At Puget Ridge, we are teaming with SPU to improve drainage conditions surrounding the park. This drainage work will be complete after the play equipment installation.

Seattle Parks and Recreation will work with SPU and the contractor to minimize impact to the neighborhood and open the play area as soon as possible which we anticipate being sometime in the fall 2019. Thank you for your patience and cooperation while we make these improvements.

Thank you to everyone who attended the two meetings in 2018 and provided input to aid the design process. The meetings were held April 16, 2018 and June 6, 2018. Meeting notes and presentation documents are available for viewing below.

Based on public input, accessibility standards, other park design standards, and budget limitations a preferred design was created and play equipment selected. The intent of the preferred design is to maintain the bones of the existing park, include new play structures that are accessible to all abilities with a focus on young kids, and improved seating and gathering spaces. See a summary of comments below.

Spring 2018

Seattle Parks and Recreation will be renovating the play area and installing new play equipment at the park. The proposal includes new play structures and enhancement to the park to improve seating and gathering, while maintaining the charm of the little park. The following information addresses common questions and concerns about the changes at the park:

  • The basic layout of the play area will not change
  • The park will remain fully fenced
  • New play equipment assessable to all abilities - focused on young kids
  • New play structures will be the size and style appropriate for our small charming park
  • Seating and gathering will be enhanced and accessible
  • One damaged tree will likely be removed (hemlock currently leaning toward the main play structure)
  • Design considerations include potentially:

    • enhancing the informal trail along the west fence line
    • removing the kiosk if not used
