Community Learning Centers

Community Learning Centers (CLC) are Out-of-School Time (OST) programs coordinated by Seattle Parks and Recreation staff professionals, based out of Seattle Public School sites and offered during after school, lunchtime, school breaks (Mid-Winter, Spring) and Summer. These CLC's are currently active in five middle schools and one elementary school, collectively serving approximately 2000 students each year. At each site, CLC Coordinators work closely with school administration and staff to ensure that OST programs incorporate both effective academic instructional models and youth development best practices. OST programs encompass a variety of academic, enrichment, recreational, culturally specific and family engagement events and activities, developed in collaboration with school staff, school-based partners, and other community based organizations catering to the unique dynamics and needs of each schools' community.  CLC's are funded through the Families, Education, Preschool, and Promise (FEPP) Levy along with grants from Best Start for Kids (King County) and Youth Development Executives of King County (YDEKC). Previously the CLC's were funded through the Seattle Families and Education Levy and the 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant, managed by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).

The overarching goals of our Community Learning Centers are:

  • All students will achieve academically and the achievement gap will be reduced
  • All students will graduate from school college/career ready

We do this by implementing the following strategies:

  • Help students achieve academic success through extended academic instruction and access to enrichment/recreation opportunities
  • Create opportunities that help students and families feel more connected to and successful in school
  • Offer programs that reflect the diversity of student interests, community resources, and cultures within our neighborhood services areas
