Seattle is taking action to prevent one of the biggest threats to the future of our city and the planet - global warming. Through Seattle Climate Action Now, we are committed to leading by example and helping everyone in the city take steps today to reduce climate-changing pollution in their homes, at work and on the road. Get involved in Seattle Climate Action Now by visiting www.seattleCAN.org.
Conservation & Clean Energy
- Seattle has been an example to other cities with our SeaGreen
program, which is at the forefront of green, affordable housing
development. The SeaGreen Guide has been used by other municipalities
and national efforts in developing local programs.
The SeaGreen materials
offer rationale and suggestions for ecologically responsible practices.
Understanding the SeaGreen strategies can be useful to anyone hoping
to contribute to conservation of energy and materials.
- HomeWise offers free weatherization
and low-interest loans for needed home repairs, and works in partnership
with low-income households to conserve energy and restore homes to
safe and weather-tight condition. Both homeowners and low-income renters
may be served by this program.
- The Seattle Housing Levy, approved
by Seattle voters in 2002, is a seven-year, $86 million property tax
levy that provides affordable housing opportunities for low-income
Seattle residents. Levy funds create and preserve affordable housing.
Smart Growth
The Office of Housing offers incentives for builders and welcomes
rehabilitation of buildings already in existence.
- Seattle
Homes Within Reach, a program for developers, encourages the construction
of new multifamily buildings, and the rehabilitation of vacant or
underutilized buildings.
