Civil Externships

The Civil Division of the City Attorney's Office offers various externship opportunities throughout the year for law school students.

The Civil Division provides legal counsel and representation to the City's elected and appointed officials, and departments. It is organized into seven specialized areas of practice. To learn more about the seven areas, please see the Civil Division page.

What are the requirements for an externship in the Civil Division?

  • Completion of at least one year of law school
  • Availability during normal business hours to volunteer in our downtown Seattle office
  • Commitment to at least one full school quarter
  • Strong writing and legal research skills
  • Excellent computer skills

What opportunities are available?

Our Employment, Land Use, and Torts sections recruit externs on an ongoing basis. Email Angelica Peck at angelica.peck@seattle.gov for information on available or upcoming opportunities in 2018.

How do I apply?

  1. Complete a Volunteer Application.
  2. Provide additional materials:
    • Letter of interest,
    • Resume,
    • Professional references,
    • Writing sample, and
    • Law school transcript.
